How might we transform an ordinary space into an inclusive area that helps students feel safe, regulate their emotions and become ready to learn?
Welcome
Welcome to the calm corner design challenge. On this website, you will find the instructions and resources needed to complete three exciting activities that will challenge you to investigate, design and develop an inclusive calm space. As you explore the website, you will discover the real-world problem you have been asked to solve, consider the needs of the students who will use the space and investigate how materials, colours, fabrics, textures, lighting and layout can support wellbeing.
Our problem
Imagine arriving at school feeling overwhelmed, distracted or anxious, but having nowhere appropriate to pause and regulate your emotions. Our learning environment currently lacks a space where students can reset, reflect and prepare to rejoin learning.
Your challenge is to investigate, design and develop an inclusive, sustainable calm corner/area that responds to the sensory, emotional and practical needs of Year 6 students.
Your Challenge
The challenge asks students to create a design for an underused school area into an inclusive, safe and sustainable calm space for students to regulate before learning begins or to take space for themselves. Students must consider the types of supplies are needed to build this space.
The tile - 'activities ' will guide you in completing the assessment to designing a real need to our school community.
